PFA launches new charity partnership that makes player giving easy ...
Your Cause, Your Way!
Today, the PFA launches its new Your Cause, Your Way! pilot scheme, in partnership with the local giving experts at UK Community Foundations – the umbrella organisation which works with the UK’s 48 local community foundations.
In the past, PFA members wanting to give back to the communities that supported them have either written a cheque for a charity or set up their own foundation, which can often involve complicated administrative and legal processes.
Your Cause, Your Way! is a new giving option, enabling players to set up named funds in order to give to charities, community groups or individuals in need across the UK without the worry of complex administration.
We’ve launched Your Cause, Your Way! after the amazing success of ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher’s work with his community foundation. Over the past six years, his 23 Foundation has worked with Community Foundation for Merseyside to donate £310,000 to sports initiatives across Merseyside, with even more money being invested for the long-term.
Seeing Jamie’s experience, we want to give members the same opportunity to give back to local causes that really matter to them, in a simple and effective way.
John Hudson, PFA Director of Corporate Social Responsibility explained: “We hope this new relationship will give both current and former players the opportunity to emulate the hugely successfully model established by Jamie Carragher in setting up and managing his 23 Foundation.”
“The new option available to members simplifies the process of setting up a foundation, giving them the freedom to take a hands-on approach to their charitable giving, without having to manage complex legal and administrative processes.”
As part of Your Cause, Your Way! you can create and name a fund as you choose. Your local community foundation then provides the fund with a ready-made back-office administration and compliance team under its registered charity number.

A Player’s Experience: Jamie Carragher and the 23 Foundation
Former Liverpool FC and England footballer Jamie Carragher set up his named fund, The 23 Foundation, with the Community Foundation for Merseyside (CFM) in the run up to his charity Testimonial game in 2009.
Proceeds from the game, along with government match funding via the Community Foundation, enabled Jamie to launch his 23 Foundation with a £1 million endowment fund. Since then it has distributed £310,000 to 55 community groups around Merseyside, as well as supporting 20 aspiring young athletes.
“Working with the community foundation has been fantastic for our charity; we wanted to do a lot of good stuff, but we didn’t know too much about going about it. They have been a great help to us.
We give them the money to look after and they’re doing a great job. For me it’s about helping kids from different parts of Merseyside who are having difficulties.”
